Chapter 16

When we’d finished our dinner, I wasn’t ready for the evening to end, so we went back to my place. Evie took one end of the couch and I took the other.

“Your dad tells me you grew up in foster care.”

She sipped her beer and shifted. “I’m not sure how much my father told you.”

“Just that your mother died, and you were in foster care while he was in prison. He said you don’t talk much about it.”

Her expression clouded. “My dad raised me all on his own until I was twelve. Then one day the police knocked on the door.”

She paused and took another drink. “The next thing I know, I’m living with virtual strangers. Robert and June weren’t true foster parents, just temporary guardians; some type of step relation to my mom’s great-aunt. Honestly, I’m not even sure where the connection is. Not that it matters. That’s where I spent the next five years of my life. I lived with people who weren’t my parents. Two kids who weren’t my siblings. They didn’t treat me badly. They just didn’t love me like my dad did.”

Evie’s whole demeanor changed while she told her story. I’d seen her spitting mad, nervous, and extremely happy. It was the first time I’d seen her eyes lack some kind of life. I scooted over and pulled her against my side.

“I don’t think anyone can love us like our dads. It sounds like you had a shit childhood, and for that I’m sorry. What I see, though, is a strong woman. One who survived tough times and came out all the better for it. I know Paul is beyond proud of you. He tells me all the time.”

She sank into me and I loved the feel of her soft body. “I missed him so much while he was gone. I try not to feel sorry for myself, but sometimes it was hard. Vanessa, the Paulson’s daughter, hated me, and to this day I have no idea why. Then there was Stanley.”

Evie shuddered. “He always gave me the creeps. Following me around. God, when I was eighteen he told me we were going to get married.”

I drew back in puzzlement. “He proposed?”

She shook her head and let out an unamused chuckle. “That was no proposal. It was a proclamation. When I told him I wasn’t marrying him, he didn’t take it well.”

An innate suspicious feeling reared up inside me. “What was his response?”

“He told me I’d change my mind, and he would wait until I did.”

“Where’s Stanley now?”

She shrugged one shoulder. “I have no idea. When I first went away to school he’d make random appearances on campus, like he was reminding me of his presence. A letter here or there. A picture. He even sent me flowers when I graduated from college. But after my dad and I moved here two years ago, everything stopped.”

Every protective instinct inside me flared. Someone didn’t just suddenly stop stalking a person, and this Stanley guy had most definitely been stalking Evie.
